Household Pets / Fulton County Pet Registration

The Fulton County animal ordinance requires all pet owners in Fulton County to license their dogs and cats. It is the responsibility of every owner of a dog and/or cat over the age of four months to obtain a  license for their pet.  Click here for more information about pet registration. Pet owners who do not comply may receive a citation from Fulton County.

Pet Adoption

Pet adoption is a great and affordable way to find a home for loving dog or cat. Fulton County Animal Services offers adoption opportunities.

Dogs

Leash Laws

When dogs are outside, they must either be restrained by a fence, wall or other enclosure, or on leashes that are no longer than 6 feet.
Exclusions include:

  • dogs participating in or training for obedience trials
  • field trials
  • dog shows
  • tracking work
  • law enforcement

Waste

It is against the law for dog owners to leave any feces left by their dog on sidewalks, gutters, streets, lots, public parks, or other public areas and public properties. Dog waste should be immediately removed by placing it in a closed or sealed container and disposing it in a trash receptacle, sanitary disposal unit, or other closed or sealed refuse container. The only exclusion applies to visually impaired individuals using a guide dog.

Dog Park

The City opened its first off-leash dog park at Morgan Falls  in 2010.  The dog park has two fenced-in areas, one for big dogs and one for small dogs to play and run free. Most City of Sandy Springs parks allow dogs, if the dogs are leashed and owners clean up after their pets.  Click here for a listing of all the City of Sandy Springs parks.

Barking Noise Complaints

Dogs bark, but if they are keeping your neighbors up at night, you could be in violation of the City's noise ordinances. If you are on the receiving end, you can report excessive noise by calling 911 or contacting Code Enforcement during standard business hours at 770.730.5600.

Kennels

Any premise where  four or more dogs over the age of four months are kept, maintained or harbored for a period of 14 days or longer, is defined as a kennel. The owner or person in possession of the premises where the kennel is located shall be required to apply for a special kennel permit.

Livestock

Sandy Springs residents who own livestock (defined by the city code:  horses, mules, cows, sheep, goats, hogs, and all other animals used or suitable for either food or labor), have a series of ordinances to comply with. Please visit the Sandy Springs Code of Ordinances for details on how many animals are allowed and land requirements  for suitable maintenance.

Deer

The proximity to parkland and river is an inviting environment for deer, and it is not uncommon to see deer in more wooded residential areas.  Fall is prime breeding season for deer across Georgia. It is also a time when drivers are more likely to hit deer that run into the road according to a study from the University of Georgia.
