Artist Statement
For me, sculpture is a special means of communication. It is a way to express thoughts and ideas about the human condition.
I usually create abstract sculptures that do not represent specific objects, people, or creatures. Instead, the sculptures explore human activities and ideas that have occupied our species for thousands of years.
These ideas include wayfinding, discovery, and the materials and processes that helped build modern civilization — as well as how those materials and activities continue to influence society today.
I often reference historical and technical processes, and I try to reveal how the sculpture was created. For example, in cast sculptures, I may leave mold lines visible so viewers can understand the casting process. When carving stone or wood, I intentionally preserve tool marks.
I am inspired by my connection to artists who came before me and those who will follow. Together, we are part of a continuous history of human creativity and expression.
