On Wednesday, June 19, Juneteenth at City Springs will showcase a captivating dance production, a STEAM digital art gallery, educational activities, an array of food vendors, and more. Presented by the City of Sandy Springs, this annual free, family-friendly Juneteenth Celebration will be a tribute to freedom and liberty.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Communities across the country celebrate Juneteenth in various ways, reflecting the event's rich cultural diversity and historical significance.
The Juneteenth celebration begins at 5 p.m. with outdoor festivities, which add an educational component to the indoor stage production and digital art gallery. Family-friendly activities include Juneteenth trivia, West African drum circle, and more.
Beginning at 5 p.m. in the Byers Theatre Lobby, LIQUID Arts & Productions presents an immersive Art Exhibition and Experience centered on the creativity of high school students from Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. The exhibition will feature interactive digital artworks. Guided by PeQue's artistic vision, these youth-produced canvas pieces will incorporate augmented reality, allowing guests to engage with innovative displays. Additionally, the students will also work on a large mural-sized masterpiece, highlighted as the exhibition’s centerpiece.
Beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Byers Theatre, Namari Dance Center will produce and direct “From Africa to America,” a high-quality stage program that uses dance, spoken word, and song to tell the story of Juneteenth.
