Renaming a Road

While not common, an existing road name can be changed.  The conditions and process to rename a road can be found in the City’s Municipal Code.

The Director of the requesting department will make the recommendation before Mayor and City Council after determining that an existing road name may pose a threat to the public health, safety or welfare.  Following the recommendation, a Notice of the Proposed Change and a Hearing Date is publicized at least 25 days, but no more than 45 days, prior to the scheduled hearing date.  In addition, signs are posted at approximately one-mile intervals throughout the length of the roadway for which a name change is proposed, and property owners located on the roadway are given notice by mail (using tax records for Sandy Springs).

Property Owner Impacts
When a road renaming occurs, property owners must consider the following areas which will be impacted by the change:

  • Banking information
  • Driver’s License
  • Billing information
  • Website addresses
  • Letterhead | Stationary | Business cards
  • Advertising or marketing materials
  • Maps

When a change does take place, the City will notify the following of the change:

  • Police & Fire Departments
  • 911 Center
  • MARTA
  • Georgia Department of Transportation
  • Fulton County Schools
  • City’s GIS (impacting city-maps)
